The Matsche Community Center & Village Hall

Built in 2012, the Matsche Community Center is a welcomed addition to the Birnamwood community.  The center carries the name of its benefactors, Norman and Alice Matsche, whose generosity was sparked by their love of, and long standing relationship in the Birnamwood community.  The center’s architecture is reminiscent of the Chicago Northwestern Railroad train depot that once stood at the same location, and was the vision of a group of students at Northcentral Technical College.  Working through a class internship project, students Josh Sommerfeldt, Brittany Shotwell and Kourtney Noah researched and presented preliminary designs.  Refined by architect, Jeff Musson, the project took life.

A year after the center opened, a bell tower with a memorial path were erected adjacent to the center.  The bell tower showcases the school bell that originally adorned the first Birnamwood High School.  After the school was closed and demolished in the early 1970’s, the bell was acquired by Nelda “Nellie” McNeil, a teacher at the High School. Nellie took the bell to Antigo, where she lived, retaining it as memorabilia of the Birnamwood High School era.  Nellie later gave the bell to her neighbor, Robert Teipner. He built a belfry at his lake house where the bell was housed for many years. The bell exchanged hands again when Mr. Teipner sold it to his friend, Dean Dewan. Mr. Dewan retained the bell in storage for several years, but upon hearing of the community center construction in 2012, Mr. Dewan decided to donate the bell to become a part of the project, and bell returned home to Birnamwood.

The center has become a focal point and meeting place for the Birnamwood community.  Village business meetings, birthday celebrations, showers, anniversaries and other gatherings have taken place in this beautiful facility.  The facility includes:
